Professor and Academician Sheng Jinzhang (J. C. Sheng) passed away on the morning of January 7, 2007, after a brief respiratory illness. His long time student and colleague, Zuren Zhou, wrote to say that he died peacefully in hospital in Nanjing without too much suffering. About 200 relatives, friends, colleagues and students attended his funeral, a brief and gracious ceremony. Professor Sheng was 86.
Professor Sheng was a 1996 Joseph A. Cushman Awardee and was recognized the world over for his work in foraminiferal studies, for directing and mentoring many students in their studies, and for his efforts in helping to establish international cooperation among all scientific workers of all countries, regardless of past events and political persuasions.
