Johanna Martha Resig was born in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 27 May 1932. She attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1954 and her Master of Science in 1956 under the direction of Dr. Orville Bandy. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was also a member of Sigma Xi, the science honorary.
Johanna emerged from USC superbly trained in micro-paleontology, able to apply her skills to a wide range of environmental and geological problems. Her first position was with the Allen Hancock Foundation, where she studied living Foraminifera of the California coast. Her publications on the impacts of ocean outfalls on foraminiferal ecology are regularly cited among the pioneering applications of the field now known as environmental micropaleontology.
